Dr Bruce and Mrs Anne Chater celebrate 30 years in Theodore

Friday, 07/10/2011

Theodore Celebrates Milestone with Local Doctor

A thirty year anniversary is normally celebrated with diamonds. For Bruce and Anne Chater of Theodore Medical Centre, their thirty years in Theodore was celebrated with the sun glinting like diamonds off the Dawson River, a venue that holds a special place in Bruce and Anne’s family as part of the final leg of the Dawson River Festivals. Theodore took advantage of the day to pay tribute to Bruce and Anne’s involvement in the community.
Friends and colleagues paid homage to Bruce, who arrived in Theodore as a 25 year old scholarship holder inheriting an old surgery, two old typewriters, seven waiting room chairs, a spirit photocopier, one phone and written card patient notes; and Anne, his new teacher wife who also became the practice manager, secretary, cleaner and nurse. Thirty years later Bruce and Anne have built, and lost to floods a practice that housed three doctors, eight staff and several allied health professionals and are now in the process of organising the construction of a new, permanent surgery in the grounds of the Theodore Hospital.
Along the way, the couple have raised a family of four boys, cemented their place as valued members of the community playing key roles in many health, service and social organisations and enjoyed many hours skiing, jetskiing and socialising on the Dawson.
Local artisan Ros Glazbrook presented the couple with a delightful portrait of themselves, a gift that was received with emotion; and Christine Hills, renowned for her prose provided Bruce and Anne with many laughs with her rendition of their lives to the tune of a Banjo Patterson classic. It was not only Theodore locals who appreciated Bruce and Anne’s choice of home with Moura local Jack Swan presented the couple with a handcrafted wooden coffee table.
In responding to the kind words it was evident that Bruce and Anne have no plans to leave Theodore in the near future, looking forward to enjoying the ministrations of a new doctor as they enjoy a good red on the patio of their unit at the Dawson Retirement Village on the banks of the river. In the meantime, there is a new surgery to build and health services to secure - enough to fill at least the next 30 years!
